It is hard to believe we are already halfway through the second trimester. This year is flying by! In PreK, students are exploring sounds and movements using instruments, recorded music, and our singing voices. In Kindergarten, students are learning about steady beat and high and low sounds. First graders have mastered the rhythmic elements of ta and titi and are currently learning about silent beats (rests!) and are beginning to compose rhythms to perform for their classmates. Second graders are learning about four sounds on a beat (tikatika) and have been learning new songs, games, and folk dances.
Third and fourth graders are beginning the Link Up! curriculum from Carnegie Hall this week. This is an exciting program that includes a field trip to Seattle to play music with the Seattle Symphony! This program teaches students about the orchestra, and different musicianship skills. Look for more details coming soon.

And just like that, the first month of school is over! In PreK and Kindergarten, students experimented with matching pitch and explored their singing voices. First graders reviewed opposite sounds (fast/slow, high/low, soft/loud) and practiced keeping a steady beat. Second and third graders reviewed simple rhythms and solfege pitches and how to read them on the music staff. Third graders also learned about steps, skips, and leaps and demonstrated them on instruments and the music staff. Fourth graders did a lot of rhythm review, which, of course, comes with playing some fun games!
Third and fourth graders also started school off right by learning some folk dances! We will continue to do folk dancing once a week.
